Deserts of the Soul is the result of some years of work between Umbilichaos and Mike Radice. Twelfth official release of Umbilichaos and sixth of Radice, was recorded in the first half of 2016, along with other work to be the artist's next albums. Still excited by the result of her participation in the album Androginóforo, by Kovtun, Anna C Chaos, invites two artists to create a companion for each work. One of them was Kovtun, who unfortunately could not take the project forward, and the partnership materialized in another way and moment, with the record Kovtun / Umbilichaos - Belong to Nothing, released in May / 18.
The other artist is Mike Radice, a friend from the early years of Umbilichaos, kindred spirit in influences and in the art of sound experimentation, with whom Anna C Chaos had only recently resumed contact. Radice is a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, at that time working on Meadowscape, his previous album. He uses a variety of instruments like drums and various percussions, flutes and horns, bass guitar, keyboards and voice to fuse styles like ambient, dark ambient, world music, industrial, electronic and tribal.
Mike was approached by Anna with a finished record, for he to create his own record, that would work as a separate release, but intending it to be an accompaniment to the Umbilichaos’. Similar to what Neurosis / Tribes of Neurot did with the Times of Grace / Grace albums. Parallel to his new work, Radice wrote and mixied his tracks, with exchanges of impressions and opinions about both works and necessary changes being made. In a process that last until 2018, what would be two independent and already mixed discs, became a single disc carrying the names of both artists. This decision led to a new mix during the previous year and 2019, done by Anna, that would live up to the brilliance of Radice, without interfering in the apocalyptic heaviness and melodic or dissonant nuances of Umbilichaos.
In the words of Mike Radice, "our record can be described as a sonic mesh of sounds and melodies that not only depend on one another, but collide with a feeling of catharsis. Very heavy riffs, paired with melodic and almost melancholic styling, with a mix of primal rhythms and dreamlike ambiance. " For Anna C Chaos, it is simply put, the best Umbilichaos album, a feat achieved thanks to Radice's creations.
While Belong to Nothing was an experiment in manipulating, editing and subverting two disparate albums transformed into a continuum of sound, Umbilichaos / Mike Radice - Deserts of the Soul, is a symbiotic and interdependent experience of sonic aggrandizement of disparate and yet similar worlds created on the basis of mutual admiration. The second part of the tetralogy of loneliness, initiated by the previous album, brings arid and oppressive themes, divided into three songs, without losing the epic greatness that occupies the art of these figures.

Deserts of the Soul é o resultado de alguns anos de trabalho entre Umbilichaos e Mike Radice. Décimo segundo lançamento oficial da Umbilichaos e sexto de Radice, foi gravado no primeiro semestre de 2016, junto a outro trabalho para serem os próximos discos da artista. Ainda empolgada com o resultado de sua participação no disco Androginóforo, de Kovtun, Anna C Chaos, convida dois artistas para criar um acompanhamento para cada obra. Um deles foi Kovtun, que infelizmente não pode levar o projeto adiante, e a parceria materializou-se de outra forma e em outro momento, com o disco Kovtun/Umbilichaos – Belong to Nothing, lançado em maio/18.
O outro artista é Mike Radice, amigo dos primórdios da Umbilichaos, espírito-irmão em influências e na arte da experimentação sonora, com quem Anna C Chaos havia retomado o contato há pouco. Radice é um multi-instrumentista e compositor estudunidense, à época trabalhando em Meadowscape, seu disco anterior. Utiliza uma variedade de instrumentos como bateria e percussões diversas, sopros, baixo, teclados e voz para fundir estilos como ambient, dark ambient, world music, industrial, electronic and tribal.
Mike foi abordado por Anna com um disco pronto, para que criasse um disco próprio, que funcionasse sozinho, mas que fosse um acompanhamento para o da Umbilichaos. Similar ao que Neurosis/Tribes of Neurot fez com os discos Times of Grace/Grace. Em paralelo ao seu novo trabalho, Radice foi criando e mixando suas faixas, com trocas de impressões e opiniões sobre os trabalhos e alterações necessárias sendo feitas. No processo que foi até 2018, o que seria dois discos independentes e já mixados, tornou-se um único disco levando o nome de ambos artistas. Essa decisão levou a nova mix durante o ano anterior e 2019, feita por Anna, que fizesse jus ao brilhantismo de Radice, sem interferir no peso apocalíptico e nuances melódicas ou dissonantes da Umbilichaos.
Nas palavras de Mike Radice, “nosso disco pode ser descrito como uma malha sônica de sons e melodias que não apenas dependem uma da outra, mas colidem em um sentimento de catarse. Riffs muito pesados, pareados com estilização melódica e quase melancólica, com uma mistura de ritmos primais e ambiência onírica." Para Anna C Chaos, é pura e diretamente o melhor disco da Umbilichaos, façanha alcançada pelas criações de Radice.
Ao passo que Belong to Nothing foi uma experiência da manipulação, edição e subversão de dois discos díspares transformados em uma continuidade sonora, Umbilichaos/Mike Radice – Deserts of the Soul, é uma experiência simbiótica e interdependente, de engrandecimento sonoro de mundos díspares e ainda assim, similares, criados com base em admiração mútua. Segunda parte da tetralogia da solidão, iniciada pelo disco anterior, traz temas áridos e opressores, divididos em três músicas, sem perder a grandiosidade épica que ocupa a arte destas figuras.
